Trade-offs in trade policy: Public Opinion
Published 25 April 2023
What do the public in the UK think about trade and trade policy? As trade policy involves trade-offs, we’ve asked members of the public across the four nations of the UK what they feel about some of those trade-offs via Citizen’s Juries. Professor L. Alan Winters and Dr Viviane Gravey describe the citizens’ juries and then three participants discuss how trade agreements should deal with pesticide standards for UK food, and with human rights in developing countries. They also reflect on the narrow set of people who get to decide trade policy in the UK and who ought to advise them. In all of their discussions, participants say that fairness really matters to them.
