Is Free Trade Dead? - A talk by Michael Gasiorek
Published 12 July 2023
Professor Michael Gasiorek asks, is free trade dead? There are public concerns about levelling up and job losses driven by competition from low wage countries, and about the environmental implications of trade, or low labour standards and human rights abuses abroad. Big players such as the EU, China and the US are introducing a raft of policies seen by some as ‘protectionist’, and these are justified by climate change concerns or economic security, and/or supply chain resilience. So is free trade what it is cracked up to be, and where does UK trade policy fit into all this? Michael Gasiorek delivered his talk as part of The Sussex Beacons Series, an event that proudly celebrates research excellence at Sussex, as part of the Summer of Research festival.
