Evidence

The UK’s future relationship with the US

Published 28 March 2025

This written evidence highlights that the strong economic relationship between the UK and the US is built on long-standing historical trade and investment ties and because of the amount of trade between the countries. Today, services trade and investment are particularly important, but the isolationist and protectionist economic and trade policy agenda of the US is putting a strain politically and economically on the relationship. Key areas of tension are tariffs, policy towards China, other taxes, differences in regulations and standards and the UK's relationship with the EU. Engaging in ‘retaliatory action’ is more likely to lead to some form of trade war with the US as opposed to a more cooperative action.
